On a budget, use a Chauvet X Factor

This is a PC based model that we use to control our 250s, the pars and 8 LED light modules on the stage. It's easy to set up, can be run on an older PC using XP and without much RAM and the volunteers don't have any problem learning it.

I think we paid about $400 or $449 for it and it lists for $499. We liked it so much we bought another one for our youth and they have a couple of moving heads they run with it and it's just right for them.

good luck in your search
I really like the way Enlighten looks but can't find much in support. I can't tell if it requires it's own USB to DMX converter or if something like openDMX from Enttec would work. I did try the software with my openDMX and it did show a DMX signal as soon as the software loads then the LED goes out and nothing I do in the software makes my interface work. If it does require their own interface I sure can't find how to get one. Anyone else messed with this software? I tried MagicQ, Freestyler and I just can't figure either one of those out. I can't find any tutorials for dummies on either one of those pieces.

I still say Jands Vista if you have $2000+ to blow or MagicQ and ENTTEC Pro on a budget. If you are buying an actual console Hog, MA, Avo are the ways to go at $5000+.

What specificly are you having a problem with on MagicQ? It is a fairly industry wide syntax.

I start the software and I have this big white box in the middle of the console. I cannot figure out what it is for or how to proceed.

As soon as I get back to the office I will step by step you through the initial set up. But I need to know what units you have/are using and their current channel settings.

To be honest I don't have any fixtures, I just want to learn a software that controls lighting.

freestyler... I used this right after I sold my light jockey system... The version I had three years ago had some bugs.... I would imagine they worked it out since then... This is an open source copy of martin light jockey with 50% of the features of light jockey...

freestyler manual...
