Non-Bloated Real Player!

I can't stand the Real player. I was happy to find this article in my inbox:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,14...l?tk=nl_sbxcol

You can download a version of the Real player from the BBC that doesn't have any nags or ads.

Enjoy!

Interesting... for that reason, I haven't had installed Real player on my own computer for several years -- thankfully they've almost completely gone the way of the dinosaur and very few sites still use it! Great resource to have just in case though, thanks!

Yeah I have a couple of things I'd like to see that were done in realplayer but I refused to load it on my system. Guess I'll give this one a try.

Don't you hate bloated software? I had to install Yahoo Messanger today to allow someone to see me via my web-cam. All the crap it did even AFTER de-seleting all the "extras"..

This is why I mainly use Tillian for chat. I also quit using Real Player becasue of how bloated it was. Even my favorite, WinAmp, which I started using years ago because it was a nice simple player over things like Windows Media Player is getting big...

I will not even touch i-Tunes. 2 people at church use it, but it seamed to go through and any media it found, it made a duplicate version in whatever format iTunes liked.... I also don't like that the updater for Quick-Time auto defaults to install itunes as well as the update. (Don't get me wrong, iTunes may be great, just from little I have played with it, won't even try it when i have something better for what features i need)

I'd even opt to pay for some software that you could get a stripped down version of. (in fact, looking to pay $25 for Trillian pro which supports Video chat so my wife can see me when i'm away, then i can remove yahoo messenger)

What you're referring to is something iTunes does when you first install it: first it says "Would you like me to scan your computer for any MP3 or WMA audio?", then when it's done that, it warns you that to import WMA, you'll have to convert them to another format (the default is AAC, which is an open standard - it's just MPEG-4 audio).

My understanding of the issue is that they licensed the ability to decode WMA for iTunes, but in order to make things work with iPods, decided to make iTunes convert the WMA to the open format.

Haven't experienced that personally. I do know some people accidentally installed iTunes when they just wanted Quicktime in the past; the trick is to choose that all you want is Quicktime on the download page.
