Domain and hosting provider

I am starting to create my first web site...for the antique car club of which I am a member. I'm using a personal web page provided by my cable company. Once we are happy with it we want to get a domain name for it and it's own hosting. After several hours of looking at options on the internet I have no way of knowing which providers are the most reliable and safe to use.

The site has been written in KompoZer. Will that make a difference? Can I get good enough service from a provider offering 3gig of web space for under $5.00 a month? Should I care if the server uses Linux or Windows?

Thanks for helping me get started.

Well I resell webspace for readyhosting.com. They flat rate $100 a year for 100 gigs of space, email server etc. If you go through me I get a commission. You also have godaddy (where you can register your domain name) for around $5.00 per month. Others will let you know where they are hosting as well.

I use 1and1.com and I pay somewhere around $27 for 3 months of service and then it's like $5 a year for the domain name (just quoting from memory so this may not be exact)

siteground.com is about $90 a year and gives you several gigs of space. I'm very happy with them.

dreamhost.com offers free hosting for non-profits. you just have to give them your 503(c) info.

I've used 1and1 and was reasonably happy with them, I just got a better resller deal at readyhosting. If you're going to have more then one site you need to check out readyhosting - you can become a reseller and get 50% off from your second site on.

For someone who does not know a thing about webhosting, 1and1 was perfect for me. I mean I have many technical skills and I can figure out most things but web design is a whole different animal.

BlueHost.com offers both domain registration and hosting, and it's pretty reasonably priced.

My sites are all hosted by MakeTheWeb.com, because I prefer the personal touch and service when I need it. I been working with him for years. If I want PHP 4, I tell him, and he makes it happen. If I want the newest PHP, I tell him, and he makes that happen.

I use 1and1.com for trinitydigitalmedia.com (and my other sites except for paulclifford.org).

You probably want linux unless you're using some specialized stuff. LAMP (linux apache mysql php) is what most of the web runs on.
