I realize that this is old... BUT... I went back through my settings and noticed that some of them had been reset. SO I changed them back again...

Take a look at this article if you want to know more:

An additional speedup is to go for "Custom Builds". There are sites that take the Firefox code and then optimize it to be most efficient for your particular processor.

Possibly the best known, but far from the only, source for these are:
http://www.moox.ws/tech/mozilla/

Of course, it's important to realize that as unofficial builds, they will be a bit behind incorporating updates and also that they may occasionally (although rarely) introduce bugs in the optimization process.

also try switching network.http.request.max-start-delay to 0 if you have a high speed connection. !!This is set by Firefox to HELP dial-ups so don't change it if you don't have a high-speed connection!!

holy moly. this is nuts. Much faster than before (at home i'm on a 56k modem that rarely gets above 24k). Will this speed up file downloads, as well?

Our churchs computer has IE5 still, and some pages don't load right with 5 anymore. I didn't want to take the chance of messing up the system by upgrading to IE6 SP1, so I downloaded Firefox and all pages looks ok, except for the alognment issues that are still there here and there. Wow! It is a bit faster.
