Smartphone Policies

Hello Everyone

i am wondering if any computer administrators have any written out policies when it comes to smartphones and email policies. I am currently on staff as the media director, but also share the role of computer administrator. Up untill a couple of months ago I was the only smartphone user (iPhone). I have my phone connected through exchange so that all my email, contacts and calendar sync wirelessly. I also have my phone setup so that you have to enter an unlock code to unlock it. We now have a couple other staff who have iPhones and iPods that do not have this feature turned on.

So I guess what I am wondering is if anyone has anything on paper that says if a staff person wants to have there phone connected to our server, they have to obey by our rules kind of thing. Just looking for ideas for people who have experience with this kind of thing. That way once I have something in writting I can just turn on the force password for mobile on the exchange server.

I should also mention that our church doesn't pay for cell phones or plans, so if a staff person wants one, it comes out of there own pocket.

If you already have a staff user agreement, I would simply add a phrase that encapsulates any WiFi or BlueTooth featured device and any other future wireless connectivity. This way, wireless devices will fall under the same user agreements and policies as a desktop/laptop.

IMHO I don't think that you really owe anyone a disclaimer. As a blanket policy your church reserves the right to restrict access to any of the amenities and privileges afforded to the church members if their activity is deemed inappropriate or counterproductive to the purposes of the organization.

As an example, does your church have a policy regarding the possession of firearms? Probably not. Do people bring guns to your church? Probably so. What happens if one of those members uses the sanctuary as a firing range? They will probably not be permitted to carry a handgun to church again.

If such an incident were to take place, nobody would be frisked on their way into the church building, however, if the pastor sees that there is an ongoing problem with the use of firearms during Sunday service, he will prohibit it and not need a disclaimer.

We have WiFi at our church, but it's password protected and only the tech crew knows the password. We only have 3 full time staff as it is and they have hardwired computers. Why we have WiFi, I don't really know.
