I agree 100% with that statement.
There is just no substitute for sitting in front of the console.

fwiw, I have successfully installed delay monitors at the mix position, that with appropriate DSP approximate the audio levels and response of being in the rear 1/3 of the sanctuary were the mix position on the floor. This has proved to be especially necessary when true line source arrays (SLS LS6593) were installed to cover the main floor.
The reason for the SLS's was because of the reflective surfaces in the sanctuary, wanting to avoid exciting too many with more vertical coverage than necessary.
No, it's not perfect, but it's really close.
