I recently was asked to start taping our services. Why? because I am a networking engineer and I have worked with several large networking carriers, government TS networks - and major government contracting agencies - training their engineers in the use of Cisco networking equipment and infrastructure design. What does this have to do with media/video? NOTHING! Of course I know how to use a computer and am very familiar with them as I used to teach all the MCSE courses for a microsoft training school. I mostly use mac these days but I digress. I can move a mouse so I was elected Media guy.

In any case... I was chosen at random. I understand about video conversion... and initially I was approached about just updating the website. I did a little here and there in HTML but I was working on changing the way a Telcom provider in my area did business so it was more just helping out than full time.

I was asked to tape services and put them on the site. I bought a JVC-HD40 just to get the sermons taped and added a senheiser G2 wireless mic system because the sound guy has as much experience as I do at video. We also do a lot of services in the park, or at University of Hawaii during the summer so I needed to be independent and not rely on the sound guy for sound since he may not bring the full gear. After a year of doing this I'm getting ok at it. I have no training so I'm sure a real videographer would shudder when he saw my work.

So I edit the video mostly using imovie hd or the JVC editing program. I've also played a bit with Final Cut Studio and Final Cut Express which I have. I film in MPEG-2 TS and then I edit and I use an ON2 converter for flash and post the videos on our site. They're not professional but please check them out and give me some critiques if you have the time... I have no idea what I'm doing!

Recently our pastor just got offered to be on a local station for free. One of our members used to work there and they will let us have a weekly time slot for a regular tv show. I'm in way over my head and my camera was never designed for TV production. I've been considering upgrading all my gear but I'd really like some advice. Cameras I'm considering are the HMC150 and as far up as the JVC HM700. I'm not a professional videographer (is that the term?) and my church has no budget as we're only 50 or so on Sundays (we just started!).... so all of this has come out of my pocket to this point. I don't mind paying the money as a local school asked me to teach a class and I said I'd do it if they'd donate 3-4k to the project, which they happily agreed to do. I can work on getting more. What are your suggestions for someone starting out that wants to "do it right" rather than constantly rebuying gear. I'm going to use FCP more than likely and am purchasing the newest version soon. Anyone have a checklist of things I should look into or what I should do first? Anyone have a good idea of which vid camera I should start with to plan for the future? SDHC sounds pretty good to me.

Also any idea where I can find some training? I know this is all for God so I'm willing to learn whatever I need to, buy what we need, or ask for help from whomever will listen to make this awesome.

I'm all alone in this one so any help is greatly appreciated!

OK, my church hs an existing PTZ camera set-up using a couple Sony BRC300 cams fed into an Edirol LVS400 video mixer. The IMAG image is fine, and to date we've been going direct to DVD recorder for archiving and sharing with local shut-ins. We want to get into live streaming for shut-ins, etc., and want to take advantage of our BRC300 excellent image quality in lower light settings (evening services, events) and not go out and buy additional IP based cams nor do we want to have a live IMAG operator and a streaming video mixing person. We have an audio line coming straight from the house mix console (via a very nice Symetrix ADA). What hardware do we need in place in order to convert analog video (composite or s-video is available) and a balanced analog audio feed into something that the video PC understands and can send to a web streaming service? I know we will need some sort of a/v capture card for a PC, recommendations for both budget and "doing it right"? Thanks in advance for your assistance!

I'm trying to look for some CG replacemets for my church. Budget is around $2,000. We currently use a luminance based CG that runs on a 386 believe it or not.

So, first, are their any software solutions that you use for a live broadcast environment? I was lookig at getting ProPresenter with the Alpha Key module since we have to upgrade to the PP4 Site license anyways.

I know we want to update to an alpha key, but it seems most everything is output through SDI/HD-SDI. Our Ross switcher is around 20+ years old and can't handle that type of signal.

If I get an SDI to Analog converter, would that output the key and fill signals? Or will I need to get a card that outputs an analog key and fill?

Thanks for the help!

in the following thread (see attachment) I wanted to know about a camera. I have access to a Panasonic AG-HMC40P. Here is what i am trying to do:
Have the camera send the video to a capture card that can accept HDMI from the camera. I then want to have that streamed live upstairs to our main server. I then want the machine in the other sanctuary to grab the feed form the main server and pipe it onto the projection system there. I ahve the projection and all that setup. I jsut need advice on a hdmi capabale capture card, some video capture/streaming software. Videolan was suggested and i am open to that. Here's the specs on all the computer hardware:

encoding machine: athlon x2 2.8 ghz with 2 gigs of ram. 100 megabit port to the server.

Server: dual p-4 xeon 2.8ghz with HT running server 2003 r21 and two gigs of ram. it has a dedicated 1 gigabit port so no contention issues.

Main sanctuary computer: pentium dual core 3.0 ghz with 3 gigs of ram. Due to building construction I've had to use wifi here. I have wireless "n" going with a steady 30 megabits(this has been repeatedly tested) available.

I can get the compression and whatnot tweaked..i just need recommendations on a hdmi capture card, streaming software..etc. Budget: max 1k.
