Breakaway bed

Any ideas on how to make a breakaway bed? For example, the bed collapses when an actor sits on it? It also has to be repeatable, I don't want to have to buy 4 beds and cut almost all the way through them.

Never done this but it would seem to me that you would cut it in half and then gaff tape it back together with a thin piece of pine or something that is strong enough to hold it together but weak enough to break when they sit on it. If they need to be able to sit on it for prior scenes you may need to get two for simplicity.

Would the bed have to be otherwise functional in all other scenes or is it just there for an actor to sit on it as it breaks?

If this is the case, get some discarded cardboard boxes (let me know if you need to know where to find some good ones for free) and stack them accordingly. You'll probably have to break a few of them completely down to give you a flat stable surface on the top of the bed until someone sits on it.

Does this constitute thinking outside the box?
