Nikon D5000 DsLr

anyone else looking at the new Nikon release. I am needing to replace my Digital rebel which has been wonderful but its not consistant anymore and I am starting to have problems. I am just trying to figure out how much Still photo quality and options I am loosing due to the Video on the D5000. Thinking I may should stick with the D90. Dont really want to spend the money to move into the pro shooter range.

Thanks Dustin

If you're already using a Canon, you may want to consider the 50D - you can reuse your lens and possibly batteries and someo ther accessories.

I think my lens is a big part of the problem. I will check into the 50d though just to see.

Thanks Dustin

Dustin, since you're considering switching from Canon to Nikon and don't really want to spend the money - then the D5000 might be a great choice.

While I haven't bought a DSLR yet, when I do, it'll probably be something along the lines of the D90. That purchase will be driven by the glass I own, since all my AF-Nikkor's don't have a motor in the lens. I don't want to give up autofocus.

So the Lenses on the D5000 will be different from the rest? I have not read that.

No that's not the case.

If you buy your lenses new or if you buy a recent vintage used lens, you will be able to use them with all their features.

You can also use older lenses (Nikon's F-mount just celebrated it's 50th anniversary in March), but you may not have all the features (lens) available to you.

The problem I have, is that I have some AF Nikkor's that I bought in the late '80's and while I could use them on a D5000 (or D40/60), I'd have to focus them manually. If I buy a D80 or 90, autofocus will work.

New lenses will have the motor in them - old lenses were dependent on motors in the camera. The D80/90's have a motor in the camera, so they'll work with the older AF lenses.

Ok, so If I understand the whole lens issue I probable want the D90. Anyone want to pro and con the D90 vs the Cannon D50.
Is the Glass on the stock D90 as good as it looks?

Thanks Dustin

I hate to be the troll to dig up older topics, but I though I'd shed some light on this.

Note: Nikon bias is probable

I own a Nikon D90, and can speak for it's performance as a camera. Unlike it's D5000 sibling, it has two control wheels allowing you to independently change aperture and shutter speed, or ISO depending on the shooting mode. The D90 is a fantastic pro-consumer camera, as it offers the quality of the D300 in a consumer body and price point. In my experience shooting both the D300 and D90, I've found the D90 to be overall easier to use, with what seem to be better results.

It should be noted that the D300, D90, and D5000 all share the same 12.3 MP CMOS sensor, but each camera has slightly different firmware, with the D5000 being the most recent. These cameras can really be broken down by the features you want, as they all provide similar results.

My wife has a 50D with the 18-200 IS lens - and it's pretty awesome. It's only f3.5-5.6 i think, but the built in image stabilization makes it usable in lower light conditions. It's a great everyday type of lens and it's paired with a pretty nice body. It doesn't do video like some of the other ones, but if I want to do video, I'd prefer to use a video camera.

I've been a Nikon shooter since 1972. I've owned a number of camera bodies and lenses. I've shot a Nikon D80 for a couple of years and it is a very nice camera but I just switched to Canon (bought a 5d Mk II) and I also use a 50D at work and i must say the 50D is a much more substantial camera, more like the D300 Nikon than the D80.

I had never spent much time looking at Canon equipment until I began looking for a full-frame sensor body. In my opinion the Canon stuff is much lower priced than the Nikon stuff for the same level of equipment and I think the 5D is the best camera you can buy today.

The D80/90 bodies are more like the Canon Digital Rebels and the Canon 50D is more like a Nikon 300D at a substantial discount. The Canon top line lenses also cost less than the similar Nikon lenses.

I never thought that I would say this but not only is Canon ahead in the technology but they are cheaper for like or better equipment. Take a hard look before you decide which is best for you.
