Camera Eye-Fi Wi-Fi SD Card

I read about this last month. It's pretty amazing.

(Description from website):

A Wireless Memory Card? Yes, there really is Wi-Fi inside that tiny little card. It's going to change the way people take, save and share photos.

The Eye-Fi Card comes with everything needed to make it simple to set up and connect to your home Wi-Fi network. After that, pop the card into your digital camera and start capturing those memories. It stores pictures like a regular SD card no matter where you are, and uploads your photos automatically as soon as you return to your home network. All you have to do is turn the camera on.

Eye-Fi Wireless 2GB Memory Card Features
  • Uploads photos automatically from Eye-Fi Card inside your camera. Built-in Wi-Fi connects to your home network.
  • Provides free and unlimited photo uploads to your computer and your favorite photo or social networking website via the Eye-Fi Service. Photo transmission is secure and private.
  • Supports sharing and printing websites, including RitzPix, KODAK Gallery, Shutterfly, Wal-Mart, Snapfish, Photobucket, Facebook, Webshots, Picasa Web Albums, SmugMug, Flickr, Fotki, TypePad, VOX, dotPhoto, Phanfare, Sharpcast and Gallery.
  • Handles full-resolution jpeg images and intelligently re-sizes photos if limited by your chosen photo or social networking website.
  • Features Eye-Fi Manager for easy set-up of wireless network and photo upload preferences.
  • Fits digital cameras that use SD memory cards.
  • Offers 2 GB of memory to store photos on the card.
  • Includes USB memory card reader to make set-up easy.
Never got around to sharing your photos from the family picnic or your best friend's wedding? You're not alone - 350 million digital images are captured every day and four out of five of are never shared. Many people never get around to uploading their pictures to share or print.

That's where the Eye-Fi Card comes in.

What is the Eye-Fi Card?
The Eye-Fi Card is the world's first wireless SD memory card. It uploads photos automatically from your camera to your computer and your favorite photo or social networking website for printing or sharing.

How does it work?
The Eye-Fi Card stores pictures like a standard SD memory card, but also uses your home Wi-Fi network to automatically upload images from your camera directly to your PC or Mac and to your favorite photo or social networking website. No cables, no cradles, no fuss. Free your memories - quickly, easily, and wirelessly! Photos shouldn't be trapped in your camera. Set them free.

They've had wifi and flash in the same SD chip for a few years now. It's not till recently that they have shortened the card. I assume they came up with a better antenna that didn't need to extend outside of the SD slot. The really cool thing with the Eye-Fi is what you mentioned in that it can be stuck in a camera and automatically upload your pictures as you take them to your computer or the web. Now that's slick.

I would like to know if this works in all cameras or just ones with the feature. So far all i have heard about is one particular camera so i would assume your camera has to support the Eye-Fi.

I may have to get one of these for my mother, who can't quite grasp how to transfer the pictures from her camera to the computer. If I can just say, "put it down next to your computer", that would be great.

On their website, it appears that it is supported by virtually all cameras AND it supports secure (including WPA2) networks too

If the service truly works at the card level(which is what it seems) then using a SD to CF adapter would get you what you want. I assume they went with a SD card so that they could use it in that strategy. We will see in the future what develops. I have already played with a Nikon D2XS with the wireless adapter that does the same thing. It was handy but i won't be impressed until it is a standard feature on all cameras.
