Canon Rebel XT

I just bought a Canon 40D (back only). I shot with my Rebel XT, D60 and the 40D. I'm still impressed with the XT now for under $500.00. I bought my XT originally for a bit under $1000.00. It gets down to what do you plan to do with it. How much are you going to mess with the buttons.

I've used a great many cameras from a minox, graphic XL, nikons, canons, even a 20x24 process camera.
Some of what's been said here I totally agree with, some not so much, and a few things were new to me but make sense.
The bottom line however is "what camera are you most comfortable with?" Yes, the future of the accessories is important but anything that's good will have stuff coming out. Nikon is more well known for having accessories dedicated to specific models but you can generally get anything you really need even if from an outside vendor.
I like Canon myself, I'm comfortable with the fit in my hand, the quality of the equipment, the variety of accessories. If you like Nikon, go with it, if you prefer Minolta (I gave my son-in-law my dimage when I got the canon) you'll be happy...heck whatever you get will be outmoded soon anyway.

This surprised me, I had never heard that. Nikon's website does not reference "Coolpix" for the D40 at all. I just got one, and there is no reference to "Coolpix" anywhere. That must be some older marketing something or other. Besides, the best Point-n-Shoot camera I ever owned was a Nikon Coolpix 950. It was swivel-awesome!

The D40x was discontinued last month, the D60 takes it's place. I have been taking Nikon photos for 20 years, and I love the D40, worth every dollar. I would try the D40 out and compare to the D60. And certainly read all of Ken Rockwell's reviews on the cameras and his excellent articles about the DX vs FX format differences.

Nikon lists the D40 as an SLR camera, has interchangeable lenses and all sorts of other adjustments, while the "Coolpix" is a Compact Digital Camera , shirt pocket size, and the lens it comes with is it. My wife has a "D" series camera, I have a Coolpix. They are entirely 2 different animals.

I just got an ad from Costco featuring 2 of the D40's (different lenses). They must have a boatload of them!

Both are good but I will prefer Canon, because it too have Canon PowerShot SX20 IS and it is simply great, so go for it.

I own a Nikon D80. I would not recommend anything other than a Nikon because of their quality. I would encourage you to purchase a step above the camera you are looking at purchasing in any situation. If you think you will get serious about photography at any point you will quickly outgrow the D40. The D80 is no longer available and has been replaced by the D90 that shoots HD video as well.
