Wireless Setup

I am having problems with our wireless router. I set it up and wireless clients can access the internet but I can not get them to interact with other devices on the network. For instance, connecting to a shared drive on the server or printing to our Ethernet printer. This is our setup. Cable modem has an IP of 192.168.2.1. Out of the modem we go into a switch and all the computers are plugged into the switch. The wireless is hooked up from the switch to the WAN port. All computer are using DHCP except for server which has an IP of 192.168.2.2 and the printer which is 192.168.2.249. DHCP lease pool is 192.168.2.100-192.168.2.199. Wireless device is a Dlink DI-524. What do I need to configure on the router to get my wireless clients on the network (ex. WAN, LAN, DHCP, DNS)?

You need to setup the DI-524 as an access point. You've got it configured as a firewall/router so the wireless clients are on a separate subnet and have a NAT relationship with the wired network clients.

So you need to turn off DHCP on the DI-524 and connect it to your wired switch using one of the LAN ports - don't use the WAN port. You may also need to assign a static IP address to the DI-524 - it should be in the 192.168.2.x subnet and not in the DHCP range. You should also set the default gateway and DNS entries. The easiest way to do this, is to access one of your wired pc's and run ipconfig /all - you should see the default gateway, and DNS server(s) that you should be using.

Make these changes from a pc or laptop that is connected to one of the LAN ports on the Di-524. Before you do this, consult the manual to find out how to recover back to factory defaults in case something gets messed up and you can't access the router.

Good luck,
Ross

Different Setup..

Most likely, you could have plugged a jumper from the switch to one of the lan ports <not the WANport> and as far as the wireless router is concerned then the switch is a extension of itself, there for works as an access point without all the setup.

The router would then act as a DHCP server, attempting to pass out IP addresses in the reverse direction of the existing network.
