wireless router/content filter solution Help

What I am trying to do is get a wireless router with a content filter built in. There are going to be quite a few people that will be using this but not at the same time. I need to be able to have atleast 90 usernames and passwords. There will not be more than 14 on the net at a time though. This is for an after school classroom for tutoring. I have looked at some sonicwall products and also some watchdog but it is not very clear wether or not you can use usernames for access to the internet. Any help would be great. Software for this is not an option. If cheap enough I could just go with a wired solution and add a wireless access point for the wireless users. It does need to be a router though.

sounds like what you're wanting to do would be easier with a server setup between the wireless access point and the internet connection itself. That way you could set up an internal domain, with valid user names and passwords, etc....

I'm not the expert on that, but a friend has a windows server set up at home to do just that. One of the keys is to keep the server and internet access modem physically secure (locked up in a cabinet or a room separate from the rest of the pc's that will be accessing the internet).

Do you need the userids and passwords? Or do you just want everyone filtered?

I dont think we can do a server solution right now with Active Directory if that is what you mean. Yes I need them to have a username and password. Really they can just have 3 catagories that they go in and that is an administrator group, Instructor group, and a student group. I did find a D-Link solution that is similar to what i am looking forhttp://biz.tigerdirect.com/applicati...271&CatId=2667. It says on there website that you can purchase and unlimited user package if needed. The base unit cose a little under 400.00. Although I am not the biggest fan of D-Link I might have to go with it. This place asked me if I knew of any solutions like this and I said I woul look into it for them. They are using an ncomputing system right now with 5 virtual workstations are running off of 2 machines. We tried content protect web filter but that created a lot of problems. So this is why it would be better for a hardware solution. Have you guys used WatchGuard before? here is what I am talking about. http://biz.tigerdirect.com/applicati...390&CatId=2667 I think it says it only supports 30 users but it is possible to get that increased.

I use Watchguard for my corporate firewall with web filtering enabled. I use the Webblocker service that I think you have to pay for extra. It works fantastic. I haven't done anything with the authentication portion of it though. Watchguard setup and configuration is very user friendly.

Yes, SonicWALL can do this rather easily. You will want to be running SonicOS Enhanced to get the Premium Content filtering. I just installed SonicWALL at my church and it works nicely (about 100 different computers on-site). With a TZ180W you can manually create up to 150 individual users. If you move up to a PRO, you can also use 'Single Sign On' which integrates with Active Directory and support unlimited users or user groups (with complete Web Filtering control per user or user group). The PRO also allows you to implement a campus wide Wireless Mesh Network with it's SonicPoints.

This works pretty well... Has a subscription fee, but the content filter lists are updated. It's called the iBoss

The IBOSS looks great but it doesnt have the individual user login that i need. we are using about 15 PCs and up to 90 differrent kids will access them during each week. What i want to do is have one login for the computer but individual logins for accessing the net so we can monitor who is going where and at what time. I think there is about 5 different instructors that will bw in there and we need to monitor them as well and keep them in line. Its sad but we have to worry about everyone. I do like the SonicWall very much and it is the amount that we where thinking we would have to spend. I am just unsure about the dlink product that I was looking. I just dont think I will be happy with another SOHO dilink product.

I recommend the SonicWall w/ Content Filtering subscription.

This works very well. The TZ170W or TZ180W are simply scaled-down versions of their professional lines. This is a great piece of equipment.
