Webcast License

We are presently beta testing our Live web casting of our Sunday services. I have had conflicting information on weather we need some type of license for this broadcast. Our plan was to webcast the whole service including music. Thanks

You do need a license to broadcast the whole thing.... here is a great link for more info.

skstarkiller's right on the money.

If you are already licensing through CCLI for the rights to display song lyrics in your church, if you review that license agreement you will see that allows recordings to be made and video recordings distributed on DVD or VHS in limited quantities to church members and supported missionaries, but it also specifically states that it does not cover broadcast or webcast in any form.

Getting the individual song rights for broadcast can be totally time prohibitive, and when I looked into licensing them through ASCAP and BMI, they didn't really have anything structured affordably for anything but mega size churches with a huge broadcast audience.

Church Copyright Administration put together their WorshipCast program within the last year, and I spent some time on the phone with them going over the details. It looks like a very practical approach, and we're now prepping to start webcasting the worship portions of our services as well as the message (adding multi-track recording to allow sweetening of the audio in post.)

The only way that you wouldn't be required to get licenseing is if all of the music was original (originally created in the church or you had permission from the original artist) or if it is in the public domain.

Good point.

The licensing is only needed for copyrighted music. Copyright lasts 50 years from the author's death, or 75 years from creation of the work in the case of a work for hire, so bring out those bar-tunes from the 1500s that got re-worked into hymns, and it's all good.

Also, another caveat. The WorshipCast license does not cover the broadcast of pre-recorded tracks (including background tracks) just your church's performance of copyrighted music, so if you do use pre-recorded instrumental or accompanyment tracks, you have to check rights on those individually.

This thread is exactly what I was looking for. I'm with a Lutheran university and we do daily chapel and want to begin webcasting it.

On a similar topic, can anyone speak to copyright issues with liturgies and Orders of Worship? We have permission to use the worship outlines since we have purchased the hymnals, but not all of the orders of worship are property of the publisher, they have obtained permission from another publisher to include it.

Is this an issue to be concerned with? There doesn't seem to be a "liturgy license" anywhere on the web...

Thanks,

Zach

What's the going rate for a CCLI webcast type license (if they offer it)? Our music director recently got a survey from CCLI and part of it asked what we would be willing to pay per month for a webcast type of license. They seemed to imply it was around $300... a MONTH.

CCLI doesn't offer webcast yet.

Church Copyright offers the Worshipcast. Last I saw a price, it was just under $1000/year. But I' not seeing a price on their website anymore.

ah ok. That would explain the questioner then. They are getting a feel for it.

I gotta say, $1000 is rather prohibitive to most congregations. I mean, unless you are pulling a lot of weekly views, that's a steep cost.

Hi guys. We are now making WORSHIPcast available to churches with weekly congregations of 500 or less for only $500.

CCLI now has a streaming/podcasting license program that started March 1, 2011 and for our size 500-999 it was only $100.00. AMEN
