Extra Parts Left Over

Posted Friday, November 7th, 2008 at 06:17 PM by tedanderson
Ever have a situation where you take something apart to "fix" it and by the time you put it back together, you end up with a bunch of screws and extra parts? Obviously they were inside of the machine before it was taken apart but somehow these extra parts suddenly don't have a place.

That seems to happen every time I disassemble a laptop. The most common repair requests that I get are for burnt out bulbs on the screens or a broken power adapter jack. Fixing the DC input usually entails removing every single component until you can get on the other side of the motherboard.

As much as I try to keep an accurate account of what goes where, I always end up with a small pile of odds and ends that I am sure the manufacturer intended to remain in the machine for the duration of its life time. But I figure that as long as it will power up and remain in one piece when handled in mid-air, I can worry about those extra parts on another day.

I have the same problem. A couple days ago I fixed an old slide projector for one of the teachers at the school where my wife teaches. When I got done I had a nut left over. Strangely enough, I didn't seem to have any loose bolts for it to go on, or even any empty holes. I pondered this a while then shipped the whole thing off to the teacher, sans-nut, but working fine all the same.
