Stepping up

It looks like we may be getting some fresh blood in the "media ministry" arena. A couple of the teens who have been button pushers in the past volunteered to learn how to actually create the slide shows for Sunday, since I am going to be gone a couple of weeks later this Summer. All it took was about 15 minutes and they were asking "can we do this?" and "How do we make it look like this?". I was really surprised not only how quickly they grasped even the more complex parts of Media Shout, but how well they understood the whole philosophy of layout that I was trying to get across to them. It just may be that we are going to have the replacements for me that I have been looking for.
Of course they are High School students, which means I have only two years before they will graduate and head off to college somewhere forcing me to start all over on the search for helpers, but for now it's all good.

| | I would have to admit that early in my church media career there were times where I encountered tasks that just weren't interesting to me. Then one day the director demanded that I sit with him and learn how to do everything that he does. THEN the bug bit me! It's something about seeing the result of your efforts that makes you want to learn more about what you do. |

| | I've always tended to "piecemeal" training with the idea that the person being trained would learn one thing very quickly and could then take over that particular task for me. It hasn't worked terribly well. I may want to think more about the idea of teaching the whole picture and then seeing if they catch the vision. They may need some more time to become productive in the short term while they try to sort out and assimilate a lot of information, but perhaps it will make it easier to get people enthused -- not to mention making me seem less like the obsessive control-freak that I am.
