There are a ton of free metronome apps for the iOS devices, ranging from simple classic moving arms to more advanced DJ-style ones with more features and sounds. I like the one from Steinway, simply called the "Steinway Metronome". It just looks really nice and it's easy to use/change on the fly. It's free as well.

Also, what did you mean by "required"? I'm not really well versed in some of the "intricacies" of other churches, just kinda curious.

I downloaded a couple of free ones and I am not impressed nor do I think I can relly on one of this. Guess Ill just go to GC and get one for $30.

When I say required its just that. The drummer has to have a metronome. They use Aviom so Ill have to feed it into my unit. They want to make sure the tempo is correct throughout the whole song. Im not a fan of the idea. I understand its needed when it comes to recording. But imho I dont think I like it for just live P&W. +. Nobody else is using it. Just me.

Ah, ok. I was thinking some sort of traditional church thing.

I definitely see the benefit of using a click track live. Lots of drummers get offended and think it's because people think they can't keep a beat, but it's really so a worship leader can establish the right tempo for that song in practices and then hit that exact feeling live. It does also have the benefit of helping out a drummer who's not as confident.

I've been pushing for it at my home church, but we already use it at the church I go to while at school and it works great.

If thats the case then I do agree. For me when a song gets more.. emotional?.. Or when I get into it I like to raise the tempo just a tad. Its really not something obvious like going from a slow worship to a fast praise. Just to add emotion. I can see how a non confident drummer would need it. Or the ones who really cant keep tempo at all. Im not saying Im perfect at tempo. I guess Ill see how well I do once I put my hand to it.

It's generally used for more of a starting point. For example, the worship leader will find the beginning speed that he/she likes and then they'll be able to match that speed when they do it live. As to pre-defined speed changes within the song, it's up to your leader how much they want to have definite speeds or just allow you to feel it.

Generally though, I've seen most just use it as a starting speed and allow their drummers to do what they do best during the song.

Ahh. That makes sense. I like that then. That way everyone can also practice the intro's and such as well. Knowing the tempo that the song will start in will help them to fine tune that begining. I know one guy that used to play with us and he could never get the tempo right in the intro of one song. It never came out right. Ill guess Ill have to get a few metronomes for the churches then and hand them out.

Does the band use any tracks/sequences? If so, the click needs to be a separate channel on the track/sequence, so that everything is on the beat (or leading/lagging the desired amount).

Not sure how they have it set up yet. Tomorrow Ill find out. Question for anyone though. How is your group using the metronome? For the church Im going to play at only the drummer(aka me) is going to be using it. But I thought that all the members should hear the click. Or at at least the ones playing.
