For the couple of times that we've been able to use it, it's been for the drummer and any other musician who had a unique part (ie. an electric guitar solo as opposed to the bass in the background).

If you're using loops, that's a great time to use a click to, just to make sure you hit it right when you want to and can play along with it.

Background vocalists probably don't need it, but some like it anyway.

Your leader, even if he/she is just a vocalist, should have it so they can direct and/or cue any changes within the song. A click is also great for everyone when opening the song, and it can look really cool when everyone starts together without having a count-in from the drummer.

Anyone who starts a song will need the click. But if that person is on a wedge, the congregation will be able to hear the click.

So... I used the metro. They dont actually hook into the mix. Its literally right next to me and its use is so that I can just start the song of with the right tempo. I was expecting it to be right in my ear but Im actually glad its not. Plus Im a lil proud to say that Im pretty good at keeping tempo. I couldn't hear the clicks but I could glance down and see the lights per beat and almost the whole time on the songs I was right on cue.

Even though this is an old thread, I'll go ahead and mention a great metronome that I use. The Yamaha Click Station
http://www.zzounds.com/item--YAMCLICKSTATION

It's big and expensive, but well worth it.
Key Features:
-a big data wheel to set tempo. You can very quickly enter the tempo you need.
-vibration - you pinch the vibration button and it silently vibrates at the set tempo. This helps you get the right tempo in your head before you start the song.
-both 1/8" and 1/4" headphone outputs.
-rubber start/stop button so it's easy to start it and stop it with a drum stick.
-threaded mounting point so you can mount it to a stand.

Plus it has all the other great stuff that Roland's Dr. Beat has.

My thoughts on playing with a click - it's hard to do! If only the drummer hears the click, then it's very for the rest of the band to pull you away.

One thing I learned to do when I'm at home practicing is while I have the click going, I take my self through various emotions - joy, anger, sadness, excitement, etc - then learn to not let those emotions effect my time. Sloppy time kills the emotion in a song. In worship music, emotion is, and should be there, but it should not cause you to daydream or have sloppy time. We are there to lead the congregation.

I just realized that I don't play enough anymore. I really miss it!
