You can zoom the track in as close as you want, or back out as far as you want both vertically and horizontally. There are little +/- buttons beside the scroll bars.

If you have the mixer visible, when a track is armed for recording you should see the level meter showing you the level of your recording. You want to run about -12dB as your "operating" level. The levels are also visible in the track view, if you have your track large enough.

As a side note, you can change the color of anything in Reaper. There are also a lot of themes available that people have put together to make everything look different. Under Options -> Themes you'll find a few, but you can also download and install a lot more from their forums.

Thanks for all the help.

I have a few last questions.

Now that I'm recording the output of my track, and monitoring is on ... the sound in me headphones is delayed. I can live with it, but what steps can i take to minimize the delay. (I need to be monitoring the post-vst-fx signal, so switching to monitoring the dry signal won't help)

secondly, I find that the overall volume of the file after a render to .wav is quite a bit less than when I used to use audacity. What cant I do (should I do?) to bring up the volume so that the media player used for playback doesn't need to be cranked so hard.

lastly, I have played around with the + - buttons on the track view, but still feel like the visual signal in reaper is less precise than in audacity. is there anything I an do so show more signal samples per second on the track display?

thanks again
