| Welcome aboard. I hope we can help. What USB device will you be recording off of?

| Here it is.... ![]() I've not seen one of those before, but I would guess that it needs some sort of specialized driver to convert the incoming audio signal through a USB port. Hopefully, someone more familiar with this will chime in.

| Like I said, I'm no computer audio expert. But I think you need a driver (which is a kind of software) for this device to be recognized as an audio input device. What OS is on your computer? Does it complain about an undefined device when you plug this in?

| Looks like with similiar devices that they are plug-n-play with windows with a USB 2.0 connection. The driver should have installed automatically the first time you plugged it in. You may need to get into your Sound and Audio devices for the computer and see if you can change the input source.

| The driver will only automatically install from the Windows installation if it recognises the actual type of USB device that is plugged in (or it is a 'generic' type of device). Anything that Windows doesn't recognise will need a device driver. I have just looked on the internet myself and there appear to be lots of companies selling this cable and a software driver disk doesn't appear to be included in the kit. If you plug the cable into the PC, the PC should detect the new hardware but may not be able to find a driver, if this is the case, you should be presented with a dialogue box where one of the options is to scan the internet for a compatable driver. Do you get this dialogue box and - if so - have you tried this option? Another possibility is that the Windows drivers have been updated in a service pack release or hotfix. Is your system up to date? |

| There would need to be more to it than just a cable with these connectors on each end. One in handles analog signals, (basically 3 channels of them), the other end has a digital send/receive line. My first thought was that the pic was just showing the ends, and that there was a device in the middle not shown. So I did some checking and also found this: http://cgi.ebay.com.my/ws/eBayISAPI....m=250474579271 For that price, this almost certainly does NOT do anything, and for the price I'm ordering one to see how they have it connected. The only thing I can think of is that some device used a "usb" connector as a way to easily plug in all three inputs from RCA and not to be used as a TRUE usb cable. If this is the case, be VERY careful, as you could damage something depending on how it is wired. Regardless, you will need drivers to tell the computer how to handle anything it doesn't recognize. You will want at the least (and very least), something such as: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MultiMix4USB/ (look on ebay for used equip, and download the drivers if they don't come with it. I used to have their 8 channel firewire mixer, and as long as you didn't put the preamps over 2/3 the way up, was nice and clean). Myself, I am lucky to have a laptop worth a great audio card in it, and never had problems plugging directly into the mic input and record from that (where as the church's and people's Dell/Sonys would get a "buz" from it). -Greg PS. a note on the above post that was written about the same time as mine, if this is just direct wired connectors, windows will most likely not even detect anything is plugged in, as the signals it is looking for would need to be 5v (and probably will accept down to 3.3), and if I remember right, normal line out is only 1vp-p. (I can be completely wrong on this though). When it arrives for the one i found I'll let you know the pinouts. |

| Do you already own this thing? You can download Audacity for free and use that with a USB interface. It's editing is somewhat limited, but it is ok for free. You will not need a driver for a Mac. You will need a driver for PC. The Audacity will see the input and your computer and sound card will do the rest. This is the same type of output that USB turntables, mics, etc use. It should not damage your computer or what is plugged into it. |

| Thanks Gregg - sound warning. I agree - the 99 cent thing looks decidedly dodgy! Anyone selling a USB connector which is directly wired to three RCA plugs or sockets ought to be horsewhipped! The USB connector has four physical pins - two of which are ground and power so - if we need to directly wire three signal sources to three physical pins, one of them must be connected to the power pin on the PC - not good for the A/V equipment (letting the smoke out of the box again)! So, there are two possibilities (1) it is a scam - stay clear or (2) the USB connector actually contains some electronics (analogue to digital converters etc.) - which will need to be driven by some software. I like Gregg's advice. If these things are cheap enough to buy one more than you need and take it apart and make sure it has something electronic in it. If it doesn't - throw them both in the trash, chalk it up to experience and pass the advice on to save everyone else lining the scammer's pockets. The thing is (when you look on the internet) there are loads of these things being sold by different suppliers. I would have thought by now that someone would have put an alert out if they were a scam? Dave |
