| It is not Audacity that limits you. It is your computer and sound card most likely. In Audacity, and with that device, you must reboot your computer WITH IT PLUGGED IN. Then you can select your input in Audacity. If Audacity still does not recognize the USB interface, then it is related to your OS, your hardware, etc. I can't help this....This is another reason to only use Macs hahahaha. Sorry. |

| I've used audacity before with a realtek device, and I can tell you that's your problem right there... the two are not compatible.

| The PC looks fairly standard (Dell box - all the latest drivers for the PC box should be obtainable from the Dell website). Can I just confirm if the "Realtek High Definition Audio" you are referring to is part of the Dell motherboard or the USB/Phono device. Contrary to Mark's post above - we have a motherboard using a Realtek audio chipset and it works fine with Audacity. Assuming that your USB dongle is a "real device" (and it appears to be from what you have said about the box of electronics between the phono and USB connectors) - how do you know it doesn't work (apart from the obvious that you can't use it with audacity)? Warning - info for XP not Vista - If you go to the control panel and fire up the "System" application. Tab marked "Hardware" and Button marked "Device Manager" you should see a list of devices that Windows 'knows' about. What is listed here, and are there any with exclamation or question marks? This indicates that Windows does not have a suitable driver for the device or that the device is faulty in some way. If you go to the Control Panel again and run the application icon "Sounds and Audio Devices" Tab "Audio" - What is selected in the drop-down box under the heading "Sound recording"? The Realtek device also has it's own setup application (if I remember) correctly which usually hides in the Tray. The audio 'chain' in a PC is somewhat fraught with difficulties even if everything is working perfectly! |

| I thought I would chime in on this... I bought It is actually a video capture card via usb and mine came with some old video editing software bundled with it. I don't actually recall if I ever tried to just capture audio from it, but it did capture audio and video through the editor with no problem. Looks like it comes with a driver disk as well. Bry |
