Live Multi-track record with Audacity

Hi,

Is anyone using Audacity to record multiple simultaneous tracks? If yes, what hardware interface are you using? How many tracks can you record simultaneously.

Any suggestions for a Windows 7 Professional 32bit, laptop (Quad-core 2) set-up? I have eSATA, Firewire 400, USB2 ports available.

Audacity does feature Multitrack recording, but not simultaneously.

We had a look into this many months ago. If I remember correctly - the executable version of Audacity can record in stereo only. If you want to multitrack you have to download the Audacity sources and rebuild it with the ASIO (?) drivers. Audacity can't ship pre-built with the code for multitracking - but it is available for free download and inclusion - but you will need a PC development environment and sufficient knowledge to rebuild Audacity.

We opted for Reaper instead and the charity licence.

What's your budget? Reaper is a great program, and it's really cheap.

The audio interface on the other hand can get costly for a good one.

How many tracks do you want to record? Is it a desktop, or laptop? Do you need analog or digital inputs?
In either case, if budget will allow, I'd recommend RME. www.rme-audio.com

For low budget, there are many options, but I don't have any personal recent experience.
