We are currently recording digitally for podcast using Audacity, but I have noticed that there is a low hissing noise in the background. It is not bad enough to make the audio unlistenable, but it's there...and I'm a perfectionist...

Well, the first step would be to figure out where the hiss is being introduced into your device chain and see if you can eliminate it. Since you're using Audacity, I'm going to guess you're pulling a feed off your sound board and plugging it into the line in on a sound card in a PC. Am I right?
If so:
- What brand/model is your sound board?
- What output are you plugged into on your sound board?
- What kind of cable are you using between the sound board and the PC?
- What kind of connectors are on each end of the cable and how were they connected to the cable (solders, crimped, etc.)?
- What brand/model is the sound card in the PC?
