Talking Rolls PM351 Monitor System

God Bless guys & gals,

Our church is getting ready to possibly purchase a rolls pm351 system. Just wanted to know if anyone had any previous experiences with it. Would LOVE to get the Aviom, but at this time it is not possible(too much $$$$$). I would appreciate yall's feedback. Thanks!

I don't see any mention of limiters for hearing protection. These have limiters:

do a search for the rolls MX56C. I think it's a more versitile mixer for that application, but either one will do the job.

we run our monitor mixes through a dbx 166xl limiter, do we still need the limiters mentioned above?

Separate limiters per station are still a good idea. Using the personal monitor stations with the central limiter does not apply limiting to the "more me" portions of the mix, nor does it handle differences between differing headphone sensitivities and individual volume levels.

Another option is the HearBack system. It's similar to Aviom, but 8 channels (1 stereo plus six mono), is pretty robust build quality, sounds very good, and costs less than half the Aviom system.

Limiters are useless when most musicians are intent on blowing out there ears. I can safely say i've never listned to and IEM mix of an artist at the volume they set it at and said "that sounds great". Usually it's quite painful. You can harp all day about how they are misusing the technology and they are going to destroy their ears but i've rarely gotten through.

Now i'm not saying you should be reckless when dealing with others ears but i do think limiters on in-ears are over-rated. I used ears without limiters for years without and never had any issue unless dealing with wireless. Wireless is a different animal. You don't always control what is getting broadcasted to the receiver. Sometimes a "law abiding" trucker comes along and lights up their 20,000 what transmitter and blows all sorts of noise into the wireless. In which the case of wireless receiver limiters have a good case.

PM351 sounds worlds better than the Aviom.. that said, musicians will normally go with lesser quality then have to communicate with a sound person, sad as that is.

jcsoldier2000, what did you go for in the end?

I'm looking for a budget setup for 8 musicians

We currently use wedges which "spill" quite a bit, so i'm looking to elliminate stage sound if I can

Cheers

Hi,
We ended up purchsing the rolls pm351 units, it has reduced our stage spillage sound/noise drastically. We still have 2 small wedge monitors so the singers can hear themselves, they didnt get any monitors. We have actually started to play better then before. Just make sure you do a good sound check before you play.

great!

did you go for just the 4?

how do the musicians cope with a cable hanging from the mic stand?
Did you go for any particualr headphones?

any down sides to be aware of?

We have 7 units total, we used black clamps & some electrical black tape which keeps the cables attached on the stand. Some of the members use SE115's & SE315 earphones from shure. I would highly recommend doing a thorough sound check, thats the only small issue weve had, its kinda hard if you want more of another instrument or voice on your mix once you started playing & your sound crew isnt paying attention.
