compress/limit @ input of ls9/m7 for ambients?

I'm experimenting w/ new LS9 and want to set up ambient room mic to send to IEM via aviom channel.

I recently set a mic in the room and adjusted Head Amp so that "room/audience noise" will generate adequate mic input (say -12). consequently when the band plays at full capacity the channel input clips severly. Adding dynamic 1 or 2 does not seem to effect the input trim.

Is it possible to apply or insert a dynamic effect i.e. compressor or limiter so that it effects the input trim before it hits the channel strip?

My goal would be to have the ambient mic open full to provide audience response when the band plays quietly or the worship leader is speaking/ praying.
However when the band is playing the ambient mic doesnot clip or overdrive their IEM mix.

Any suggestions?

So, back the input trim down to to where it doesn't clip anymore, make up the gain digitally with the compressor/limiter.
Else-wise, you're adding an externa mic preamp with compression in order to achieve the same thing you can do inside the box.

Where are your miss located? What type? The only way to prevent clipping is to turn the gain down.

As the others have said, set the trim for the loudest sound in the room. Then if needed make up the gain in the compressor section. Then set the compressor so that when the band is playing, the ambience mics don't screw up the mix.
