The first step may be to determine if it is a cable or computer issue. If you have some computer speakers or any other powered speakers, does it work if you connect to those instead of the laptop? If you connect a CD player or similar to the laptop does that work?
Have you verified that the microphone input is active and turned up in the laptop sound configuration? |
Can you describe the second cable a bit more?
Yes, it was purchased from Best Buy. I asked for a cable to take the Tape OUT L&R ports to my laptop mic jack. The closest I could find had the appropriate connectors, but said it was intended to plug into an audio media devise's headphone jack then use the RCA connectors to plug into an external speaker.
Also, do you know if the mic input on the laptop is a stereo input?
I don't know, but I'll check tonight.

I'll test and see what happens?

I feel like an idiot, so no, I didn't. That's the first thing I'll check tonight.
