Question Carvin Concert Series C1644 to PC for Recording

Hi, I'm a novice at managing the mixing board for my church, though I have been doing it for 2 years now. My skills are basic at best. We use a Carvin Concert Series C1644 mixing board and currently record to tape via the RCA ports. We would like to add a PC to save the recordings to burn CDs. I added 2 "Y" connectors to the RCA ports for TAPE OUT L & R to keep the connections to our tape player while using the 2ND connections to add a cable (this cable is designed to be used to take audio from a media device via headphone jack to the RCA connection of a speaker/amplifier) that runs to the mic connection on a laptop. This didn't work. Using Audacity, we failed to detect the audio to be recorded. Just silence. Do you have any suggestions?

Can you describe the second cable a bit more? Also, do you know if the mic input on the laptop is a stereo input?

The first step may be to determine if it is a cable or computer issue. If you have some computer speakers or any other powered speakers, does it work if you connect to those instead of the laptop? If you connect a CD player or similar to the laptop does that work?

Have you verified that the microphone input is active and turned up in the laptop sound configuration?

Can you describe the second cable a bit more? Yes, it was purchased from Best Buy. I asked for a cable to take the Tape OUT L&R ports to my laptop mic jack. The closest I could find had the appropriate connectors, but said it was intended to plug into an audio media devise's headphone jack then use the RCA connectors to plug into an external speaker.

Also, do you know if the mic input on the laptop is a stereo input? I don't know, but I'll check tonight.

Have you verified that the microphone input is active and turned up in the laptop sound configuration? I feel like an idiot, so no, I didn't. That's the first thing I'll check tonight.
