Never mute someone who might say or shout something meaningful in the middle of his "un-gifted singing - bring his fader down just enough to hide the problem, and keep your finger on said fader.

Not only that but if you have a mute group of all 'speech' mics then it can depend on the mixer as to whether it will let you unmute an individual mic assigned to that mute group or if you have to unmute the entire mute group in order to enable any microphone assigned to that group. The latter can be associated with a very noticeable change that is not necessarily desired if you're really wanting to enable just one mic.

I'm also not a fan of assigning all instruments to one mix group. You typically have some instruments for which a large part of the house sound comes from the live sound from the instrument (drums, guitar and bass with amps on stage, brass, etc.) and other instruments (keys, DI'd bass and guitar and so on) that may rely entirely on the sound system for any reproduction. How you mic and adjust those two different situations may be very different for the house versus remote listeners. For example, if an acoustic drummer start playing louder or softer then because they are also hearing the direct sound from the drums, in the space you may have to adjust everything else to compensate for the level of the drums. However, for recording, broadcast and ancillary feeds that are not hearing the drums 'live', it may be preferable to instead adjust just the levels of the drums.

We do a couple different things with our LS9-32. We use an Aviom and a Dante card, so our Aviom is for our IEM's and our Dante card feeds a PC for recording.

I know the LS9-16 only has one card slot, so choosing a single card to fit your needs get pretty tough.

I have a Matrix feeding my foyer mix. Before service when the band is still rehearsing, it would be awful to sit in the foyer and hear what is really going on. I tried a few different methods to try and "mute" the mono send to the Matrix, to no avail. BUT, I finally figured out that you can take a mono send, assign it to an input on an Rack channel, assign the output of a Rack channel to a Mix, assign the Mix to the proper Matrix, and whenever you turn off the main fader for the Mix, it cuts the signal to the Matrix.

OK, here is my exact set up. Mono is assigned to the input of Rack 5, Rack 5 out put is Mix 12. My Matrix 2 is my foyer sends, has a few different settings (Mix 3 is pastor/announcement vocals, Mix 6 is CD/Media, and Mix 12 is FOH). If I turn off my Mix 12, I don't get any FOH to my foyer Matrix. Also, if I turn off Mix 3, the only Pastor/announcement vocals I get are fed from Mix 12 the FOH mix, which we keep pretty quiet, and we place emphasis on the Pastor/announcement slightly.

OK, hope this helps and adds to your repertoire of LS9 operation.

Thank you all so much for your replies, I'm going to digest the info and have a think about where I can make some changes. I'll no doubt be back with some more questions
