My bad on the M7 playing files - I thought it did that as the LS9 does. Guess I need to read the manual again (which I will if I get a gig on which I need to mix on one).

UDK = User Defined Key. Very nifty things. I use them for: Muting all channels save for MC & break music; Muting all monitor mixes; Muting all FX returns; Muting an FX send; Tap Tempo; Opening an FX rack in Studio Manager.

USD is a typo - UDK - must have been getting sleepy.

To use MIDI to control playback software, you may need to use translation software to change the MIDI message from the console into a MIDI message that the playback software can understand. Here's one: http://www.bome.com/products/miditranslator (there's a free Windows only version - "Classic" - with a smaller feature set).

A friend has MIDI'd an LS9, playback computer, and lighting console together - advancing the scene on the console plays the track and advances the lighting scene. A lot of work, but if it's a lot of performances if can be worth it.

Why not? I think the response was directed at Tim's earlier comment that you could play files off the USB stick, however I would expect the manuals or other product literature for devices with MIDI to address their MIDI communication.

I remember years ago when MIDI was a new technology a local music store had a sign up that said "MIDI Consulting - $25/hour, What is MIDI - $100/hour" and this may be one of those situations where not knowing how to do something also means not realizing how complex and involved it may be or the potential limitations and problems with doing it, the reality is that just because you want to do something does not mean it is feasible, practical or the best option.

You might want to do a little searching online and find relevant discussions such as these, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SFX_Users/message/6624 and http://www.controlbooth.com/forums/l...7cl-mixer.html, which discuss the limitations in triggering external devices via MIDI from the M7CL. Apparently, probably the best approach is to utilize show control software that allows creating and triggering cues that include the show control software playing the media files and also triggering the M7CL scenes via MIDI, if you even need to recall scenes on the M7CL in that scenario.

I'll also offer that in my experience being respectful to those trying to help you and thankful for any relevant insights offered will probably make people more willing to help. If responses are not going in the direction you intended there are much more positive ways to approach that.
