NEED: Shotgun Boom. Current NOT cutting it

Hey bro's/sis's,

Started youth pastoring a new student ministry, and we are doing a lot of media. I own a HVX200 and have owned it since it came out day 1 I bought a beyerdynamic MCE 72 for I think $49 bucks back in 2005, from ebay. It was a low bid entry and they misspelled it. I have a decent Fishpool boom and need something that will allow me to shoot in a coffee shot or outside without catching a lot of ambient noise, or wind. (I also have a boom sock for this the beyerdynamic MCE 72 shotgun boom.

Please help! This current is selling for like $300, so maybe I can sell to buy something else. IDK Any direction into a shotgun boom would be awesome!

Your Beyer is a stereo mic. The two pick-up areas when combined gives almost 360 degrees coverage around the mic. You might want something monaural and mre directional like a Sennheiser MKH416 or MKH60.

I would recommend a Rode NTG1. Depending on where you look, ebay has one for USD185, some are used on amazon USS220, or brand new from USD250.

Tom listed two of my favorites so i'll just add the Senn. K6 w/ME66. The K6 setup is a bit cheaper and you can use the K6 module with different mic elements. The Senn MKH416 is the standard when it comes to Shotgun mics. Yeah you can get a better mic for more money but it scales very quickly with very little return.

Okay. Well we can't spend 200 bucks (money out of our own pockets) at the moment. Any ideas where I should try to sell this mic, and how you think I can realistically get for it?

Depending on the condition it is in you could get 80-160 for it. Also i wouldn't refer to it as a shotgun mic, it is actually a just a stereo mic. As Tom pointed out it has a really wide pattern between it's two capsules. Outside of ambient sound capture it really doesn't have much usage in the video world. Now in the studio world you can do some fun things with it.

What do you mean in the studio it can be fun? This is in mint condition. Maybe I'll just put in on craigslist. I know the windsock was like $100, maybe I can get $260 for the set up and buy the Rode one... (maybe I can just get rid of for like $190 with the nice windsock?)

Off the top of my head, room mic for drums. Perhaps even overheads, or reverb chamber, or really anything where stereo pickup is beneficial.

For your application you need something with a narrow pickup pattern and strong side rejection, which generally equates to more expensive.

The stereo mic might make a good addition to a church looking for a good "nat sound" or audience mic.

The 66 is a decent mid-low priced cardiod mic. I think you'll be happy with it based on your other posts.
