Audio from Mixer to Video Camera (3.5mm)

Currently we are planning to use a consumer quality camcorder to record our services. I would like to get the audio from the mixer into the camera's 1/8" (3.5mm) mic input.

The obvious choice is to buy a Beachtek/Juiced Link type device and I have someone willing to sell me one for $100 if I want it. But give me your thoughts on how the following would work and if I can save the $100

I currently have a 1/4" cable that is connected to an Aux Send on the back of my mixer (Mackie SR24-4) with a 1/8" connector into my computer.

What if I:
  • ran a 1/4" cable from the mixer into a DI box with a cable (XLR on one end with 1/8" connector on the other) from the DI box to the camera
  • ran a 1/4" cable from the 1/4" out on the DI box into another DI box with a cable (XLR on one end with 1/8" connector on the other) from the DI box to the computer
This would get the audio from the mixer to both the camera and the computer using the DI boxes we already have.

Sorry for writing a book, but would this work?

I am not sure I follow but here is what I would do.

Run from your mixer AUX out to the DI box. Now from the other 1/4 in jack on the DI to your computer (1/ plug. (That puts you back where you were but you have added the DI. Now run a cable from the DI XLR to the 1/8 in camera mic input.

This is giving you a line level input to your computer and a mic level input to your camera.

Thanks for the quick reply! What you suggested will get me audio to the camera plus what I've got right now and that's great.

The part that probably confused you was that I was going to add the 2nd DI box because although it is ran into what is supposed to be a "Line In" on the computer the signal still seems to be too hot.

The 2nd DI box is not a requirement as we can just use your suggestion and be fine. I was wondering if adding that extra DI box would cause issues. If not we may try it as a way to knock the signal down a bit.

Hopefully that's a little bit clearer.

Watch out for line noise since you're mixing balanced/unbalanced signals.
