Question How to keep audio from clipping

Does anyone have any suggestions to keep the audio from clipping when the feed comes from the sound board. I set the input levels but there were several points during the production that they got too loud on stage and clipped the audio. I've made due by lowing the board feed and taking sound from the shotgun mic but I'm looking for a better solution.
Would a compressor on the feed from the board to the camera work?

Yes, a compressor is what you are looking for. It can be set so that the sound level will not exceed a threshold.

Some questions. Is it really just at a few points when the distortion occurs or is the distortion there all the time but gets much worse when something loud happens?

What level audio signal is leaving the audio mixer?

What level audio input is your camera set to take?

Thanks.

It's only clipping when something loud happens. Other than that it doesn't have a problem.
It usually leaves at -18 -12 but since I'm having to use an Aux out (rec out is too low) it sometimes gets too hot.
I set the camera just below the red line at the normal loud points. The camera doesn't show the db. The video when imported says the audio is mostly at -20 to -16.
