This just makes me smile... when I started out in broadcasting (1960s), we wouldn't use more than a couple of mics for the entire band. Blend was controlled by a combination of mic position and pickup pattern (the 77Ds were especially handy, as you could turn the shutter vane and change the pattern from omni to bi-directional to various cardioid shapes). If the band leader was doing his job controlling dynamics, the blend was generally quite good.

Of course, back then our console had all of twelve channels with knobs the size of baseballs... and the tubes kept the whole thing nice and warm to the touch.
