Or.... - Select the object.
- Go to Select -> Modify -> Frame and choose a frame of 10 pixels or so.
- Create a new layer
- Fill the selection with white (or preferred color).
- Make original layer invisible.
- On the new layer, play with Gaussian blur and transparency until you get the look you are looking for.
